Loryn Johnson

Spring 2024

Two rotation students joined our lab this spring. Loryn and Dexter are both members of the PiN program. Dexter is working to characterize new reporter mouse lines that will allow us to purify lysosomes or mitochondria from the brain in a cell type specific manner. Loryn is investigating the role of peroxisomes in TBI.

National Capital Area TBI Research Symposium
College Park, MD

March 8-9, 2023

After a 2-year COVID break we were finally able to attend the annual NCA-TBI Research Symposium. It was great to present our data and get to know colleagues from Maryland, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania involved in all aspect of preclinical and clinical TBI research. Amir and Chinmoy were both selected for oral presentations; Sage was one of the finalists in student poster competition.

Great job everyone!

Goodbye to Niv

February 28th, 2023

Niv Hegdekar started in the lab as a MS student in 2015 and was accepted to the Biochemistry PhD program in 2016. Her PhD thesis focused on the role of autophagy in regulation of inflammation in brain trauma and resulted in two 1st author and multiple co-author publications. In addition to her MS and PhD Niv completed UMB President’s Entrepreneurial Fellowship and Master of Science in Law (Patent Law) degree at the UMB School of Law. She also served in several student organizations, including 2 years as president of the UMB University Student Government Association (USGA). For her service she was awarded the 2021 UMB Presidential Core Values Award for Leadership and the 2022 Otani Award, which recognized a PhD student with outstanding academic and service record.

Niv is starting a position as a Strategy Consultant at IQVIA, Boston, MA. Good luck in your new venture, Niv. We will miss you!
